Ogie Alcasid and Regine Velasquez's "Celebrity Ukay-Ukay" opens to a chock-full of people

All the hard work of Ogie Alcasid and Regine Velasquez was rewarded with a crowd that Pinoys could only describe as "hindi mahulugang karayom."
On the first day of Heat Wave Summer Bazaar at the World Trade Center in Pasay City, the Songwriter was brimming with gratitude: "Maraming salamat sa mga kasamahan natin sa industriya na sumuporta. Maraming salamat din sa inyong lahat na nagpunta rito. Hindi po namin inakala na ganito karaming mga taong nagpunta rito."
Then, he added in jest, "Huhubarin ko na po pati sapatos ko."
His wife was not in attendance because, according to the host-comedian-singer, "kailangan niyang magpahinga."
Nonetheless, Asia's Songbird was already informed about the massive support that their "Celebrity Ukay-Ukay" generated. "Ibinalita ko na po sa kanya ang success nito...At alam niyo, maraming natutulungan ang Kapuso Foundation kaya kami po ni Regine ay nagpapasalamat."
THE UKAY-UKAY CONCEPT. Mel Tiangco, the EVP and COO of GMA-7's socio-civic arm, was equally grateful for the couple's generosity.
In the speech she delivered this morning, April 15, 2010, she says, "Si Ogie Alcasid at si Regine Velasquez, palakpakan niyo nang malaki...nang malakas, sapagkat alam niyo, sila po ang nag-suggest ng project na ito. Sa pamamagitan nila, napakarami sa kasamahan nila sa showbiz ang nagbigay ng mga donations nila ng mga gamit nila."
The concept, GMA-7 female news anchor says, came about because, "Noong sinabing mabibigyan kami ng booth, hindi naman puwedeng mag-negosyo ang foundation. Pero dahil sa kanila, lahat ng mga iyan ay nakalap na donation mula sa mga artista.
"Hindi po binili iyan, kundi buong pusong ipinagkaloob sa foundation para sa ganun ay maging pera at magamit sa mga proyekto, specifically ang pagpapatayo ng eskuwelahan. "
Another person that the 24 Oras anchor acknowledged was Mayose Bautista of Cut Unlimited, which organized the event and provided space for the "Celebrity Ukay-Ukay."
"Kami po ay napakapalad at panay-panay ginagawa kaming beneficiary. Ang hindi po ninyo nalalaman, ang 50 percent ng kikitain ng bazaar na ito—ito po ay bukod pa diyan sa aming maliit na ukay-ukay—pero ang 50 percent ng kikitain nito, ido-donate pa rin ng Cut Unlimited para sa mga projects ng Kapuso Foundation," she said to the crowd.
THE RECORD-BREAKING TURNOUT. The organizers did not anticipate the influx of people—some of them arrived as early as 7 a.m., which was four hours earlier than the official time of opening.
Mel personally apologized for the confusion, "Kami ay humihingi po ng paumanhin sa inyo na ang akala ay magbubukas kami ng alas-siyete ng umaga...Kung kagabi niyo napakinggan sa 24 Oras, naririto ako ngayon, ako nagsabi na alas-onse ang bukas. Baka po yung alas-onse, napakinggan niyo, alas siyete? Pero, malayo ano!"
To those who grumbled about the "pila" and "siksikan," the veteran newscaster quipped, "Hindi maiwasan sa dami ng tao pero sa umpisa lang naman 'yon, at hindi natin maiwasan na ganun. Pero sa kabilang banda, e, nagpapakita din naman ng magandang pagsuporta nila."
This overwhelming response of Kapuso viewers may pave the way for a repeat in 2012. Mel remarked, addressing Ogie, "Baka next year, puwede na 'yon na ang buong bazaar ay para sa 'Celebrity Ukay-Ukay?'"
The Bubble Gang and Party Pilipinas mainstay replied, "Kung hihingin po ng Kapuso Foundation, gagawin namin."
But one more thing that Ogie looks forward to, he says, is: "Ang dream ko one day, e, mapuntahan ko ang mga eskuwelahan."
The stars' in-kind donations will go to the Kapuso School Development project of GMA Kapuso Foundation.
Heat Wave Summer Bazaar will run until April 17. And, yes, the celebrity ukay-ukay will still be on!
