When James Yap won his first MVP plum, he was also high on a pedestal of love, making his victory and success even sweeter. With his beloved wife Kris Aquino uplifting him on from the sidelines, James proudly hoisted that trophy which he dedicated to her, and they were happily ever after.

So much has happened in four years.

In the recently concluded Leo Awards, James Yap was again adjudged as the best among the crop of superstars, but his wife Kris Aquino was no longer on the sidelines, neither was their son Baby James, whom he dedicated that MVP trophy he cradled to.

So much has happened in four years.

During his acceptance speech in front of thousands of spectators at the Araneta Coliseum and millions more watching on television, everyone hung on to every word to hear what he had to say.

“Alam naman nating lahat kung ano yung pinagdaanan ko sa personal ko na buhay,” every one cheered. “Talagang nag papa-thank you ako kay God na binigyan ako ng strength na mag focus every game and talagang proud na proud ako sa sarili ko dahil nag perform ako ng mabuti.”

James went on and thanked his family, the team, the management, and even Coach Ryan Gregorio who is already headed to coach Meralco. The coliseum once again came to a roar when he thanked the fans, specially his ever so supportive Yapsters (fan club).

He paused for a while and bit his lip. Let out a deep breath, as if preparing to say something Earth shattering. But he seemed to have bought himself some time to calculate his next move by filling in more words of heartfelt gratitude to his managers (and there are a few of them), and the fans (didn’t he thank the fans already?). He thanked the PBA, the Press Corps, Solar TV (you’re welcome), then another pause and deep breath.

“Gusto ko i-dedicate ito sa special kong…. Uhm…… Tao sa buhay ko.. walang iba kungdi yung anak ko si Baby James”, and the crowd went wild. I got all choked up when he directly addressed his son “Para sa yo to, I love you. Miss na miss na kita”.

He wanted to say more it seemed. He looked down on the ground and said “syempre gusto kong…”, then all of a sudden knocked some senses into him and just thanked everyone again and ended it there.

Less is more, they say. His short speech spoke volumes.
