Despite losing to Mongolia, 1-2, in Ulan Bator, Mongolia, the Philippine Azkals still made it through the qualifying round of the 2011 Asian Football Confederation (AFP) Challenge Cup after an aggregate score of 3-2.

The series follows an aggregate scoring system, wherein the league rules say "two teams play two matches against each other, with one match played at each home stadium. The scores are added (aggregate score) to find a winner." The Azkals advanced due to its 2-0 victory over Mongolia in their Bacolod City match last month.

The Azkals' James Younghusband scored at the three-minute mark, but the Mongolian Blue Wolves countered with two goals, courtesy of Donorov Lumbengarav and Bayasgalan. Their two-goal production, however, was not enough to eclipse the Azkals' two-game total of three goals.

Azkals will next face Myanmar for the succeeding leg of the qualifying rounds.
