Leftist leaders made a big mistake joining Bongbong

QUEZON CITY – Satur Ocampo and Liza Maza, prominent leaders of Leftist militant groups, made a “big mistake” when they ran for senator alongside Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., according to political analyst Mon Casiple.
The younger Marcos, the only son of former president Ferdinand Marcos, has been proclaimed senator heralding the Marcoses’ comeback to political power. Former First Lady Imelda Marcos was also elected Ilocos Norte congressman while daughter Imee won as provincial governor.
Ocampo and Maza, who ran with Marcos under Manny Villar’s Nacionalista Party, both lost in their senatorial bids. Ocampo and Maza are serving in Congress as respective party list representatives of Bayan Muna and Gabriela.
“Isang malaking mistake yun ng kaliwa. Nawala sila ng pagkakataon na merong sana mag-expose ng Marcos records during the 20-year dictatorship. Hindi nila pwedeng i-brought up ang Marcos wealth abuses noong panahon precisely because katabi nila si Bongbong habang nagkakampanya,” Casiple says, referring to Ocampo and Maza.
This inability to speak about their anti-Marcos sentiments during the campaign proved to be a weakness, according to Casiple. On the other hand, Bongbong Marcos ran a more sound campaign.
“Ang focus ng tao nasa presidential candidates. And the Marcos issue never came up dahil yung posibleng magdala niyan na mga taga-kaliwa ay kasama din niya,” says Casiple. “Sa marami sa Left, ang justice sa Marcos victims ay usapin ng prinsipyo. Walang inaaming kasalanan ang Marcos family hanggang ngayon.”
Casiple also points out that younger voters, which comprise a major portion of those who voted on May 10, are largely unfamiliar about Martial Law, which worked to Marcos’ advantage.
“Bongbong comes across as somebody na bata, pogi, magaling ang ideya but they didn't remember na yan si Bongbong was part of the Marcos regime. And the fact that the Senate elections is based on name recall, Marcos was able to benefit from it, along with re-electionists and scions of political dynasties,” he says.
