TV5 sad over John, Randy's rift with Willie

By Glenda Villena, For Yahoo! Southeast Asia Thursday February 10, 2011 11:17 pm PST

TV5 expressed sadness over the controversy surrounding Willie Revillame, John Estrada and Randy Santiago that has resulted in a heated word war.

"We're sad that na affect friendship nilang tatlo," Perci Intalan, TV5 Head of Creative and Entertainment Production said in a text message to Yahoo! Southeast Asia.

John and Randy accepted an offer from ABS-CBN to host its new noontime show, "Happy Yipee Yehey!," which is set to premiere on Saturday, February 12. Their longtime friend, Willie Revillame, was upset by their move, claiming he had arranged for them to be part of an upcoming TV5 show with the network's top bosses. The three had headlined the ABS-CBN noontime show "Magandang Tanghali Bayan" from 1998-2005.

Days after Willie castigated them on air in his show "Willing Willie" last January 28, John announced his departure from his TV sitcom "Everybody Hapi" and the Sunday noontime variety show "PO5".

"John has taped his last episode of ‘PO5' and his remaining epsiodes (of ‘Everybody Hapi') will be airing this month," We would have wanted to finish the rest of the season for both shows but John opted not to finish them na, I guess he is starting to work on his daily show on abs-cbn. We wish him well and hope to one day be able to work with him again," Perci said in another text message.

However, John claimed that he was axed from "Everbody Hapi" in a press conference of his new noontime show on Tuesday, February 8. Because of this, he said, he was forced to resign from "PO5" and instead granted the broadcast rights of his wedding to Priscilla Meirelles to ABS-CBN.

In reaction, the TV5 executive said: "Basta we wish him well on his new show. Tagal rin namin siyang nakasama, and we hope na one day makatrabaho pa rin namin siya."

Pacquiao and his knock-out “Justin Bieber” ‘do

Leading up to the WBO Welterweight fight on May 7 (May 8, Philippine time) against five-time titleholder Sugar Shane Mosley, Manny Pacquiao appeared at their Los Angeles press conference to kick off their tour to promote their fight sporting a big smile and a new hairdo!

The 32-year-old indeed looked younger with his Justin Beiber-ish hair style and his sweater-shirt with jeans getup. And standing beside the 39-year-old Mosley who was garbed in a spiffy light-colored suit, it just brought more emphasis on the age gap.

Their next appearance will be on February 12 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas where the fight will be held, and then they’ll be spending their Valentine’s Day showing the New York fans some love with a promotional event there. The day after, Pacquiao is set to meet with US President Barack Obama and the first lady at the White House.

The fight will be produced and distributed by Showtime Networks Inc., and its parent company CBS for the first time. Showtime will also produce Fight Camp 360° as a preview of Pacquiao vs. Mosley as CBS will also be doing features this April leading up to the fight.

“I’m excited to be fighting on May 7 because it’s covered by Showtime and CBS. It’s going to give more boxing fans a chance to see the fight,” shared Pacquiao. Showtime is shown on 115 million homes as compared to HBO’s 28 million.

The congressman from Saranggani also he promised to give the fans the biggest fight of the year as he puts his 52-3-2, 38 knockouts record on the line.

Curious to see how his hair, will affect his fight though. Justin Beiber keeps flicking his head sideways to get his hair off his eyes. What if Pacquiao needs to do the same? What if he flicks his head to the right and catches Mosley’s punch? That would be tragic like “baby, baby, baby no!”

'Happy Yipee Yehey!' challenges 'Eat Bulaga!'

By Ed Sicam, For Yahoo! Southeast Asia Wednesday February 9, 2011 09:35 pm PST

ABS-CBN has been plugging the premiere of its new noontime program called "Happy, Yipee, Yehey!" on Saturday, February 12. Not a very catchy title, I thought.

The newest noontime offering on Philippine TV will be hosted by Randy Santiago, Mariel Rodriguez, Toni Gonzaga, John Estrada, Bianca Manalo, Jobert Austria, Bentong and Melai Cantiveros. In short, the show will recycle talents from previous lunchtime productions, which failed miserably against perennial noontime leader "Eat Bulaga!" The new recruits like Melai and Bianca have yet to prove their pulling power.

I am not optimistic that "HYY" will be a strong threat to the near 32-year noontime program. Unless there's something really new to attract viewers or one ridiculously high cash prize, like P10 million, "HYY" will go the way of "Pilipinas Win na Win," which ended its mere five-month airing on New Year's Eve last year. Remember that Kris Aquino, who usually commands high ratings whenever she's part of a show, failed to pull in the viewers to "Win na Win."

But you can never tell. ABS-CBN's "Student Canteen" was the leading noontime show for decades since its inception as a radio show in the 1950s. After GMA-7 revived the show two years after Martial Law was declared, "Student Canteen" was the only noontime show in the 1970s before "Eat Bulaga!" premiered July 30, 1979 on RPN-9.

At that time, "Eat Bulaga!" had its hands full in competing against "Student Canteen," which enjoyed a vast audience being the only noontime show Filipinos knew. With mass-based programming, sticky contests like "Macho Man," "Miss Gay Philippines," and "Little Miss Philippines," and hosts like Aiza Seguerra and Coney Reyes fusing charm to an already humorous, wacky trio of Tito, Vic and Joey, "Eat Bulaga" managed to dislodge "Student Canteen" from its lofty perch by the 1980s. And the rest is history.

Of course, "HYY" could pull the same feat but it's a long shot.

By George, he's got it

While the fortunes of "HYY" seem uncertain, a male heartthrob now seems to get things right.

For the first time since 2005, when Sam Milby first gained prominence after the reality TV series "Pinoy Big Brother," I watched the Fil-Am actor actually speak fluent Tagalog in an interview aired on ABS-CBN's "SNN." While he may still not offer that distinctive Pinoy accent, Sam is moving in the right direction in terms of embracing the Filipino language.

If he continues his "integration," Sam will see more thespic doors opened for him, such as opportunities to take on more roles, unlike his typecast mumbling and fumbling balikbayan portrayals, and compete head-on with full-blooded Pinoy actors.

Phil asks Angel out on a Valentine date; Angel declines

By Glenda Villena, For Yahoo! Southeast Asia Thursday February 10, 2011 12:22 am PST

After the successful win against Mongolia on Wednesday, Philippine Azkals booter Phil Younghusband has officially asked "Imortal" star Angel Locsin for a date this coming Valentine's Day through Twitter.

In his recent tweet, Phil casually asked Angel if she has any plans for Valentine's Day.

Phil tweeted on Thursday, February 10: "@143redangel Hi Angel! This Phil. How are you? I was just wondering if you are free for Valentines day?" Phil said.

But Angel's reply was "@PhilYHusband hi! this is angel Congrats on your win last night! Tnx for the invite but I have work on valentines.. Let's try another day."

Phil earlier declared his admiration for Angel and fellow Kapamilya star KC Concepcion. After Piolo Pascual admitted the real score between him and KC, it seems Phil now has his eyes set solely on Angel.

Kris Bernal says her love life is zero; neither confirms nor denies if Jay Perillo is courting her

Di tulad last year nung ka-loveteam ko pa si Aljur [Abrenica]. Kahit di kami lumabas noong Valentine's, magkasama kami kasi may taping kami noon.

FAMILY DAY. How will she celebrate Valentine's Day?

Venus Raj: No hand in Rica leaving UKG

Venus Raj: No hand in Rica leaving UKG

MANILA, Philippines – Beauty queen Venus Raj, 2010 Binibining Pilipinas-Universe and Miss Universe 4th runner up, laughed off speculations that she had something to do with Rica Peralejo and some hosts leaving ABS-CBN morning show “Umagang Kay Ganda (UKG).”

Raj, along with Iya Villania, will join the UKG gang starting Monday. Raj will deliver the latest and the hottest showbiz reports.

She will also host the newest segment of the show, “Barangay Bida,” which will air every Friday.

Peralejo bid goodbye to the show on Friday last week.

In her live interview on “The Buzz” Sunday, the 22-year-old beauty pointed out that she is in no position to demand who should go or who should stay in the TV program.

She explained that some hosts opted to leave the TV show so as to give them more time to do other things.

In Peralejo’s case, Raj said the young actress-host is planning to study. “Gusto din niyang mag-concentrate sa kanyang pag-aaral.”

She added: “May iba magco-concentrate sa news.

Raj was also all praises for her UKG co-hosts. “Sobrang accommodating.

As for criticisms that she is not a good choice to become a new host of UKG, the 2010 Miss Universe 4th placer said she respects their opinions. She asked them to give her a chance to show that she can do her job.

Alam kong kaya ko kaya tinanggap ko,” she said.
